The Higgs is Bigg!
The Higgs is Bigg! I think the problem is too abstract for people to realize that the work that led up to detecting the Higgs and the importance of its detection is bigger than landing someone on the moon.
It probably has something to do with the fact that the CERN LHC project is not being done in the United States, that most people in the USA are almost unaware of it. But this is the largest scientific research project ever attempted, and except for wartime, it is the largest multi-national project ever attempted.
The LHC is a marvel of miracles when it comes to technology. When it fires off it uses as much power as the city of Geneva. It is built in miles of underground tunnels, yet it is so precise they had to compensate for the slow drift of the geological faults it spans in its circuit.
I recommend reading Phil Plait’s Bad Astronomy blog on the subject. Plait is a successful astronomer turned science writer. So he is both accurate and accessible. He also references Sean Carroll’s real-time blogging from the scene this morning at CERN. Carroll is a well known theoretical cosmologist. (this is Sean M Carroll, not Sean B Carroll, the biologist).
